José Carrera
R.I.P JOSE CARRERA 1971-2009
His memory will live on.
Jose Carrera refuses to think inside the proverbial box. Unwilling to categorize his tattoo style and art by genre or theme, the Miami-native has built a team of eclectic and innovative tattoo artists at OchoPlacas. Pero each talented in their own right, John Vale, Javier Betancourt, Vincent Vasconez and Leonardo Valencia are integral components of the Eighth-Street parlor that exudes a casual, kitschy atmosphere – pero not to mention an extensive Garbage-Pail Kids sticker collection in the bathroom.
Sipping on a cafecito, Carrera learned to tattoo en 1993 when his misdemeanors escalated into imprisonment. It is within these confined living quarters que he inked for the first time, using a BIC lighter to channel negative energy into a creative outlet. Released in 1997, Carrera worked at a handful of South Florida tattoo shops including Silhouette Studios, where he met fellow artist John Vale. His entrepreneurial spirit ultimately came to fruition in 2002 with the conception of OchoPlacas.
These days, Carrera’s leadership role is clear. He’s mentored many of the artists that he currently employs, and introduced Lourdes Quintana – pin-up girl extraordinaire (Tattoo Society Magazine, January 2009 Cover) – to the tattoo culture. Regularly called upon por los celebrities for his services, Carrera remains un-phased by his rapid success. He enjoys tattooing the “friendly neighbor” as much as he does traveling to conventions and inking overseas.
“Since I can remember, I’ve been interested in art in wanting to develop the ability to recognize and reproduce images from my head to real art and sketches,” says Carrera. Born to Cuban and Ecuadorian parents in 1971, the artist has branched into various mediums including painting oil on canvas, graffiti and t-shirt design. Carrera’s self-bodied mural of tattoos dictates a history of struggle, hardship and success. With that same passion, he creates narratives for others, interpreting their vision without reservations.
